Check out the trailer for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the 1996 genre-defining game. As Lara Croft, harness your wits and athleticism ...
I’m glad the tone is going back to the original games. I hated the tone of the reboot series, it turned one of the representations of strong, capable women in games and pop culture into a perpetual screaming rape victim.
There was a lot of neckbeard stuff going on around the time of the reboot, but seriously, it felt like they rebooted indiana jones and turned him into a whimpering victim. I get that’s what they were going for, and the tone they wanted and etc, younger Lara, whatever. It turned a powerful character established as independent and capable and stripped it away.
As someone who can barely remember the original games I could have been fine with a weaker and scared portrayal, especially towards the beginning of her career - but the tonal dissonance between that & her routinely slaughtering dozens of goons without showing any remorse destroyed the immersion. The whiplash between the two extremes was just too much.
Yeah the gameplay definitely didnt match the tone. Killing was the only option for most of the game. In the cutscenes, she was portrayed as a survivor or whatever. Then in the actual gameplay she was a stone cold killer.
Same problem with the harry potter game. It’s supposed to be about the school, but then you end up wandering the world murdering 100s of people
I thought that was the intent of the reboot trilogy. At the end of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, she is hardened now and gets her second pistol. But I played that once back in 2018 so I don’t remember exactly how that game went with themes.
I think Legacy of Atlantis is actually a remake of the first Tomb Raider, so I think Crystal Dynamics wanted to be like “Don’t worry guys, you’re also getting a new one” at the same time.

Hyped for this!
Wonder why they decided to announce both at the same time though. Seems like a bit of an odd choice.

I wonder how many re-makes of TR1 we’ll get in all. So far:
Not tired of them yet, played them all so far and won’t stop now.
Butt shot: check
Looks pretty fun to me, if the gameplay is anything like that.
Boy, the mods for this game are going to be something.
