I loved Black Mesa when I played it. I never played the original believe it or not, and it was a great first experience.
Yeah I’m with you on that, I don’t have hardly any time these days for games. I’ve got a baby at home, and I’m up for a promotion to a management position so I’m extra busy at work right now trying to impress the bosses, which unfortunately means later shifts most of the time. That probably won’t go away much if I get the manager job, which is the one aspect I’m not looking forward to. Oh well.

The blasphemer learns the truth and comes crawling back.
Just kidding. I totally get the allure of a new game and then getting disappointed to find out the game isn’t all that great. It’s why I’m such a big proponent of patient gaming. It really is the best way to go about it imo, and I’m not just saying that because I’m the mod here.
I love Elden Ring on NG+. Honestly any FromSoft game is great for NG+, it’s just so much fun.

Absolutely. I also loved infection on that one map that’s in the same world as the forge map, it’s like a floating level over water. Can’t remember the name now, it’s been years. Then there’s also a good one that’s all indoors, sort of a fancy human building, maybe corporate or hotel originally, I can’t remember now.
Then Alexandria was awesome, there was a super cheesy spot you could get to there. Oh and then there was an outdoors map with sort of a circular building in the middle of the map, that was great for infection too. Oh and then another indoor one, all grey walls, small outdoor area where you could fall to your death.
Now that I think of it, I think I just loved that game altogether. Damn now I’m nostalgic.

Good to know. I do have some official 360 controllers still but they’re all in poor shape at this point. Only the one that I used to use is undamaged, but I forgot to remove batteries before storing it so it got corrosion and is very spotty and turns off a lot. I’ve been putting off cleaning it properly, by just not playing my 360 for a while, but I really should fix the controllers and give the console a nice treatment to bring it all back up to running order again.

The 360 definitely has to be my overall favourite console. I’ve been meaning to give mine a good refresh but I’m not very experienced. How’d the process go? Any tips? Mine is put away right now but I’ll be moving in about a month and I’ll probably be setting up my 360 in the new place, so I’d like it in nice running order.
Also, do you know much about controllers? I wouldn’t mind getting a new 360 controller but something’s telling me Microsoft isn’t making the official ones anymore, have you tried any after market ones?

like they were made for someone with neither time nor interest in playing an MMO
It might be up my alley then. I have virtually no time these days for games. Most nights, by the time all the chores are done and my daughter is put to bed, I’m just too exhausted to play anything. I probably only get about 2 hours a week or so to play games. I played ESO off and on a bit a few years ago, maybe I should hop back in sometime.

I’m sticking with Morrowind still this week. I haven’t had much energy lately so I put my main playthrough on pause, created a new character, and I’m messing around with console commands to make him ridiculous (increasing speed and jump height so now I’m zooming across the map). It’s quite fun. I’m going to mess around with other commands soon too.
Before trying console commands I did briefly try using exploits instead but it seems either I messed up or OpenMW patched it out or something. I wasn’t too invested in the exploit, mostly just the result for this character, so commands work fine.

Great picks. ME2, RDR2 and BioShock were all games I contemplated for my list. I omitted ME2 for the reason you mentioned, and BioShock didn’t make it because while it’s absolutely a fantastic game, I don’t find it to have the same replayability as Dishonored, which I chose for my last pick. RDR2 would’ve been my sixth pick.

CE probably has my favourite campaign (both solo and co-op), but for PvP it’s definitely Reach for me. It’s also the one I’ve got the most time in by far.
I didn’t get much into Halo 3 for some reason, I’m not sure why. Aside from the campaign, I mostly just stuck with Halo 2 until Reach came out. I was also getting into CoD a bit between playing 2 and Reach so that also sucked some time out of 3. Then after Reach I got super into Battlefield 4 and that was my main PvP without friends but with friends I still mostly played Reach until my friends moved on from it. Now I almost exclusively play single player games, with the exception of one friend who I’ll sometimes play NHL with.

To be fair it has been a while since I’ve tried BF4, but last time I gave it a shot I was waiting for a match forever and when I finally did connect the lobby was mostly empty. It’s possible I got unlucky though. I don’t have my Xbox anymore so I’d have to get it on steam and I’m pretty sure the anti-cheat doesn’t work with Linux but I could be wrong. Maybe I’ll look into it again at some point. I do miss playing it.

I’ll start the ball rolling. For me, I’d probably have to go with:
Skyrim - first off, it’s my most played game ever, and also my most purchased game too. Is it the best game ever made? No, I don’t even think it’s the best Elder Scrolls game. But there’s something so captivating about it for some reason and I can’t help but always go back to replay it all these years later. If mods are allowed to survive the video game apocalypse then it makes it a very easy choice but I’d still choose it even if it had to stay vanilla.
Pokemon Soul Silver - something for kids to play, but also my favourite Pokemon game and one of my most replayed games ever. Between having your Pokemon follow you around, the Johto region plus Kanto, and also the music, I think it’s the best Pokemon game ever made, and a game I can’t go without playing the rest of my life.
Elden Ring - I was torn between this or Dark Souls III, but I went with ER because (1) it’s more accessible, and again remember every other game is permanently destroyed so this does affect everyone, and I’d like to be at least a little nice in my choices, and (2) I find myself able to replay it a bit more, especially with the DLC. I’ve mentioned it many times before but I truly believe SotE is the best content FromSoft has ever put out, so it would be a shame to have it destroyed.
Hitman: World of Assassination - it’s sort of cheating as this was originally three separate games, but they’re all bundled together now and Steam recognizes it all as a single game in my library, so I’m including it. Plus it’s my list and my post so I say it counts. Anyway, I don’t see Hitman posted a lot on Lemmy, but it’s my second most played game ever and I really do think if you can get over the admittedly high cost to get all the content it really is a masterpiece of a game. It’s also got way more replayability than you’d initially think just looking at it, so it’s a great contender for this post. This is another Skyrim situation where I don’t think it’s a top pick for greatest game of all time but it’s just so easy to replay that I couldn’t omit it from here.
Dishonored - I really didn’t know what to put for my last choice. I was tempted to do another massive open world game like Red Dead Redemption 2 or cheat again and do another bundle game like Mass Effect Legendary Edition or Halo Master Chief Collection, but I decided to go with a game that is a bit less intensive to complete but is still really fun to jump back into and try a new style with. I feel like it’s a bit of an underrated game these days. I know it was very well received and sold well but I don’t hear about it enough when talking about modern-ish classics. This is probably my favourite game that’s not a sandbox or open world, aside from the FromSoft games. The art style is gorgeous, the story is engaging, the DLC is a great add-on, the gameplay is diverse and super fun, it’s just such a great game all around.
My list is probably going to be very different from everyone else’s, but that’s part of the fun.

I’m happy to see you finished all the Halo games. The Bungie games (CE-Reach) are some of my all-time favourite games and I love to see others enjoy them too. It’s too bad it didn’t gel with you as much as it did with me but I’m still glad you had fun with the series regardless.
Writing this out made me super nostalgic for Reach actually. Probably my best ever gaming moments were playing Reach multiplayer with a friend of mine I haven’t seen in probably close to a decade now. I’d give anything to go back to prime Reach multiplayer again with him. That’s the trouble with multiplayer games, it’s hard to revisit years later. I also used to play a ton of Battlefield 4 multiplayer one time but again, can’t really replay that these days. I stick to single player games now which does have the nice side effect of future replayability. I’ve got a super strong sense of nostalgia for Batman Arkham City and thankfully for that game I can actually go back and revisit it. But multiplayer games I can’t.

Exactly. One of the benefits of patient gaming (shoutout to [email protected]) is I don’t need top of the line hardware to enjoy my hobby. I’m sure the GabeCube will run multi-year old games very well.
Between working >40 hours a week and raising a kid I only really care if the game I spent 2 hours a week on is going to run and look good enough. If I have to play on high instead of ultra I’m not gonna have a meltdown.

Yeah, that’s totally fair. You’re definitely not alone in those feelings, it’s just not something I personally share.
I’m almost the other way around in that I’m pretty easily satisfied with most games. I don’t have much time for gaming these days, between work, raising a kid (still just a baby), and trying to be a good husband, so by the time I’m actually able to play something, I usually just want to shut off my brain and play something to have fun with it. It’s usually after they’re both asleep, so it’s either game or sleep myself. With that being said, sticking with a game is a different story. I bounce off a lot of titles these days. I’ve been trying to get into Morrowind for years, currently on another attempt. I’m really enjoying it so far, and I have enjoyed my other attempts too, it’s just never hooked me before. I really hope this time I get properly hooked and get to sink a good amount of time into it. It’s not a game I can turn my brain off for but I also don’t need laser focus for it either, so it’s a good balance. If I get too mentally drained I play either Oblivion or Skyrim, both of which I have so much time in I can practically play asleep, plus it keeps me in the Elder Scrolls mindset. My problem before was my backup game was always a Soulslike, which is usually my preferred genre these days, but then I get sucked into that rabbit hole and don’t touch Morrowind again for a while. I’m hoping that sticking with the same series keeps me in the mood for it and I can play it a bit more consistently.
Like you said, weird brain thinks how it does, there’s not much I can do about it. Except maybe trick it into wanting to play a game I know I’m going to enjoy. It sucks I need to force myself to do something I enjoy though. Oh well.

I’ve been trying (again) to get into Morrowind. I’m enjoying my time with it, I just really hope I stick it through to the end this time. I want to put a lot of hours into it but any time I try to get into it, something comes up or I get distracted. I’ve put a couple hours into this character now, hopefully I can keep it up.

I’m glad you finished Halo 3, it’s too bad it didn’t live up to your expectations though. It’s understandable for a series with so much hype, but I was still hoping you’d like them like I did. I also played them when they were coming out though, which could play a factor in it. I hope you enjoy Halo 4. It’s my least favourite of 1-4 but it’s still a good game. It’s definitely more polished and modern feeling.

I hope someone takes Starfield’s ship building, adds something new and interesting, and releases it as a main feature of a new game. Every now and then I’m tempted to hop back into Starfield just to mess around with that mechanic. Or maybe if Bethesda makes a sequel, but tames it down and listens to fans to make it a really solid game, and brings back the ship building. I’d definitely give it a shot.

Yeah, that’s fair. I get what you mean. I guess I agree with that too because I have more time in Fallout 4 than Starfield by a fair bit. I would still consider them to be comparable though in terms of quality, with Fallout 4 just a bit above Starfield. I like both games though, but don’t love either. I really enjoyed the ship building in Starfield too, it was one of my favourite aspects of the game. Settlement building in Fallout 4 was pretty fun but not nearly as fun to me.

I’m pretty sure I was the only person in the world who enjoyed Starfield, though the criticisms are definitely valid. It’s not a good RPG but it does make for a fun initial playthrough if you just do the main and major side quests. I would cautiously recommend it on sale due to the reception but I happened to find it fun. I sunk about 60 hours into it on my first playthrough but didn’t pick it up after. Still, 60 hours of having fun is worth the cost for me personally. I’d only recommend it on sale though, but that also goes for nearly every game so take that with a grain of salt.
I also happened to really enjoy Fallout 4, but again not as an RPG. It’s not a great RPG but it is a really fun open world FPS game with mild RPG elements and a sadly lacklustre post-game, just like Starfield. Procedurally generated areas definitely harmed Starfield where it didn’t harm Fallout 4, but otherwise, to me personally, I’d say they’re comparable in terms of quality. Hot take, I know. I’m prepared to have this be the most downvoted comment in lemmy history, but that’s just my opinion. Take it with the grainiest of salts.

I read about this last night and decided to finally give Morrowind another shot. I’ve got about 6 hours of playtime and I really did enjoy it when I was playing it but I couldn’t get hooked for some reason. I downloaded OpenMW 0.50.0 last night and I’m doing a new playthrough, hoping I get hooked this time. I really want to get into this game more.

Fair enough. Nostalgia is definitely a huge part of why I love the Halo so much. I still think I’d like them if I tried them today for the first time, but my history playing the game for so long definitely improves my opinion on it for sure. I’m glad people like you are still able to enjoy the game without the decades of nostalgia for the series to sway you. The early games are fantastic.

You’re making good progress! There’s nothing more fun than obliterating a boss in NG+ that gave you trouble in NG.
