I’m skeptical that enough games run on arm to make that work.

Yeah, like the other person said this is normal for the borderlands games.

I agree with you, I don’t like it either though.

It shouldn’t but people (especially in the context of something “not important” like gaming) as a mass do not operate on logic.

So I guess I agree; but, you’re probably wasting your breath “yelling into the wind.”

I guess, put another way, I’ve done it many times/used to think more this way and I think I might have appreciated more nudges that “… yeah you’re right but people are going to people regardless of what makes sense.”

Yeah, I got it like its first day of early access, super excited by the art style and then got immediately turned off by the stamina system.

I don’t think I’m a big souls-like fan, but I can at least tolerate Elden Ring, Lords of The Fallen, and really enjoyed Remnant II.

I also don’t know if they’ve changed this, but I found their exit game button being hidden behind tab and then a submenu within that overlay to be just incredibly dumb.

I ended up refunding it for the above.

It looks like they still haven’t implemented co-op which is also a huge shame. That might have at least made it somewhat more worthwhile (for me anyways).

It’s really just a shame as I love the art style and the world seems really cool … but I really don’t want to deal with the stamina system.

I think asymmetrical could be fun, but it is really hard to get the balance right.

All of those games including dead by daylight make the movement feel so bad that I just can’t stick with them though.

Like, you’re being chased by Killer Klowns and you run like you’re in a CSGO map with full tactical gear on. It’s just dumb.

Presumably they had to to redo all the models and textures; though their may have been an automatic conversation they developed to help them save time on some of the things they didn’t want changed.

Then they had to bolt on unreal engine’s rendering loop on top of the original engine’s logic and replace all the UI code as well.

It’s not a particularly easy job. Easily a few years worth of work for a decent sized team.

Intel … why are you still shooting yourself in the foot…?

Anything with a server software you can host can be played on LAN (okay probably not some things because they’re being weird but in general this is true).

That means counter strike, Minecraft, supertuxkart, xonotic, enshrouded, pal world, etc

I’m coming at it from “I’ve played a couple hundred hours of CSGO and a little bit of CS2 which is basically CSGO but with a couple of graphical upgrades and minor game play tweaks leveraging those graphics, like the bullets punch holes in the smoke.”

CSGO and CS2 seem more familiar than different, so it’s somewhat surprising to me that CS 1.6 would be fully reimplemented by someone. Normally that only happens when the game significantly changed (e.g., RuneScape changed its combat system and then the old combat system was resurrected under OSRS), so … I’m trying to understand what was that significant thing is.

So what’s the big difference between 1.6 and 2?

More like MBA conduct … number must go up now!!! Not later, now!!!

Maybe just maybe Intel… You should consider sticking to the same socket for a longer period and generally increasing the long term value proposition. Especially considering the amount of stagnation that came from your company in the desktop space.

Yeah, I was really confused when the game Brighter Shores first entered early access with its initial aggressive chat moderation system (because it’s out of the UK law and the liability on their part is insane I guess) and a bunch of people were like “seriously? I got banned for this.”

Nobody was getting banned, they were getting temporarily muted and calling it a ban.

I feel like “ban” is a term that used to have a really clear meaning: you can no longer use this service. Now, it seems like that word is increasingly being abused to just mean: the service stopped me from doing something I wanted to do.

But I have such a soft spot for how beautiful the console is from a design and hardware standpoint. That boxy gray box is such beauty.

Agree to disagree lol

What will be really great is when this gets to a point where game developers no longer have to do so much work to get realistic lightning.

Like, “just place your objects into your scene and done” seems like it would be a real productivity and quality boost.

It turns out consumers aren’t totally mindless drones that just buy whatever you publish because you’re Ubisoft, Ubisoft.

I swear they’ve been incredibly cocky in recent years while simultaneously producing bad games, and broadcasting their stagnation and unwillingness to take risks on anything that isn’t a new revenue stream (as if being formulaic profit hounds is a strength).

I swear MBAs ruin everything. Infinite growth is a horrible horrible idea. I wish we could break out of this cycle of every big company trying to market themselves as the company that cracked the code on the infinite money glitch. The code is … make a good product and be decent to your customers; it’s an ancient code, and it’s so annoying that so many C-suite folks can’t see it.

Yeah … Brighter Shores is the true RuneScape successor, though the end game activities aren’t implemented yet (i.e. procedurally generated dungeons and bossing and tons of other content).

This game seems nothing like RuneScape.

Arguably Brighter Shores is a cozy game and it’s got an appealing art style to my eyes

I get Tim’s reasoning though with Xbox, Switch, and PlayStation. As it stands, these are not general purposes operating systems. You don’t “install apps” on them, you play games, maybe stream a show, and maybe use a web browser (but realistically few people are doing the latter two with these devices). They’re also typically much more subsidized because Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft can recoup a lot of the hardware cost in game sales (where as Apple and Google increasingly make the most money off of the hardware sales).

Compare that to the Apple and Google case; like imagine if Microsoft and Apple had done this with PCs in the 90s. The world would look significantly different because you couldn’t install various things on Macs. Like as an example, Firefox and Chrome arguably wouldn’t exist (or would be a pain to install), because your system would ship with Safari and Internet Explorer (and the other browsers would just “not be allowed”).

This is hugely anti-competitive in a way that’s far more offensive than Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft’s behavior on their gaming consoles. These are not general purposes devices (maybe they should be, but they’re not). Basically nobody is doing their taxes on a Switch or PlayStation … but plenty of people use iOS/Android devices as their only computers (they do their taxes there, pay their bills online via these devices, etc).

Tim is taking a moral stand … and I know he gets a lot of crap, but he’s not wrong to fight Apple and Google about mobile app stores.

Apple and Google created entire operating systems where the flow of almost all transactions flows through them.

Some people don’t even have computers anymore, the just use these mobile platforms.

It’s hugely anticompetitive (especially in the Apple case where you can’t even install – without heroics – non-Apple approved apps).

I disagree with Tim on Linux.

I also disagree with his approach to taking on Steam dominance … mostly because of the Linux bit but also because I don’t like exclusivity deals. That said, people may eventually appreciate what Tim has done here should Steam turn sour. It is kind of scary that so much depends on the good will of the aging Gabe.

I don’t disagree with Tim RE Apple and Google’s app stores.

Well like, basically every shooter currently uses a hitbox to do the hitscan and that never matches the model 1:1. The hitboxes are typically far less detailed and the weak points are just a different part of the hitbox that is similarly less detailed.

I think what they’re doing is using the RT specialized hardware to evaluate the bullet path (just like a ray of light from a point) more cheaply than can be traditionally done on the GPU (effectively what Nvidia enabled when they introduced hardware designed for ray tracing).

If I’m guessing correctly, it’s not so much that they’re disregarding the mesh but they’re disregarding hitbox design. Like, the hit damage is likely based on the mesh and the actual rendered model vs the simplified hitbox … so there’s no “you technically shot past their ear, but it’s close enough so we’re going to call it a headshot” sort of stuff.

If you’re doing a simulated shotgun blast that could also be a hundred pellets being simulated through the barrel heading towards the target as well. Then add in more enemies that shoot things and a few new gun designs and… maybe it starts to make sense.

https://www.pcguide.com/news/doom-the-dark-ages-promises-accurate-hit-detection-with-help-from-cutting-edge-ray-tracing-implementation/

Honestly, I’m not interested in debating it’s validity especially with the exact details of what they’ve done still under wraps … I have no idea if they are really on to something or not and the details are scarce, but I did find the article I read.

It’s a different thing. This is pixel perfect accuracy for the entire projectile. There aren’t hotboxes as I understand it, it’s literally what the model is on the screen.

They used ray tracing for the hit registration so that’s presumably why.

It’s a really interesting idea … presumably that means there are some really flashy guns and there is a very intricate damage system that runs at least partially on the GPU.

Yeah, eternal was for me one of the best video games ever

It’s definitely still an early access game, but it’s progressing nicely, incredibly stable, charming, backed by a passionate team, and well priced.

Everyone I know who actually pays to play Jagex games acts like it’s meth or heroin…

It’s pretty far from that, but it is absolutely an abusive relationship and has been for some time.

I didn’t watch the video, but in my experience, no… They just have very strong ideas about what they don’t like.

The reality you live in must be nice. The CCP is just a peaceful little government trying to live its peaceful little life and bring people peace and happiness.

China is a threat though. Destruction of as many computers as possible is a real threat. CCP members being able to request access to control servers and fire employees that might otherwise refuse is a real threat.

So much of this is automated. You request SSH keys for “a review”, upload a file to the distribution system, it sends it out as an update, and the update waits for the command and control server to say “go” before sending your credit card numbers from Steam to the CCP and bricking your computer. If it ever happens, it will be over before you know what hit you.

I mean this is FSR upscaling that I’m referring to. I did several comparisons and determined that it looked significantly better to upscaling using FSR from 2K -> 4k than it did to run at 2k.

Hunt has other ghosting issues but they’re related to CryEngine’s fake ray tracing technology (unrelated to the Nvidia/AMD ray tracing) and they happen without any upscaling applied.

I mean it’s a profit engine for the CCP and it has its own rootkit (that people willingly install) in the form of Vanguard AntiCheat as well as that other one being used in the new DeltaForce game.

Eh I’m pretty happy with the upscaling. I did several tests and upscaling won out for me personally as a happy middle ground to render Hunt Showdown at 4k vs running at 2k with great FPA and no upscaling or 4k with no upscaling but bad FPS.

I’m in like the opposite camp… But I’ve never been able to get past the initial learning curve of the game. Something has never clicked with this one for me

It would’ve been fine… If Google had stuck to it and marketed it, it would’ve worked out. I’m convinced interest rate hikes are what actually killed Stadia.

Also it wasn’t even Netflix like… You’re right about one thing though, part of the reason stadia didn’t do well is 90% of gamers think it was some laggy Netflix for games thing.

People blame the sunsetting decision, but most people stuck around. Honestly I don’t think the stuff they sunset was all that good. The original planet designs were feeling tired. They have brought missions back as well… But it’s been too long since I played to remember exactly how they brought them back.

The actual issue in my mind is they’ve decided making things hard means giving it a lot of health and make it take almost all of yours in one hit. So the only things that are viable are people’s cracked builds.

Basically without a full team of good shooter players, even easy mode dungeons are out of reach. Things just do so much damage and have so much health, it’s just not fun. Everything feels like a slog unless you go look up a cracked build someone made.

Actually, not everything feels like a slog. The content that doesn’t, everything just dies without any challenge.

So the options to play are roughly:

  • comically easy
  • this will take forever
  • this will take forever + 1 and hit like a truck
  • this will take forever + 2 and you instantly die

With some content having only the last 3 options.

They added some new enemy types recently, but it just hasn’t been enough to really make the game feel refreshed. Like, Remnant II showed how to do this well, different enemies, different ways that they attack you, different ways to ideally kill the enemy (i.e. lots of weak spot variety), lots of different attacks for the bosses (and death is a matter of avoiding the attacks not being in a 12 hour fight), every bullet takes a significant chunk of their health bar, etc

The locations have also felt a bit underwhelming, but that would be okay if the fights felt challenging and rewarding … not just like various reskins of the same enemies with either no or way too much health.

If you’re interested, now is a good time to start playing. There are some limited edition hats being dropped for the holiday!
