For an open source solution, DivestOS’s Carrion is probably the best bet. There are a few others kicking around f-droid as well.

I haven’t used it, but I’ve heard good things about it and I enjoy many of their other apps. I too just use the google pixel blocker because its way too good.
Anyone know if this works fine alongside work profiles (seems like it doesnt conflict) and if apps like insular/shelter are going to be able to configure the private space?
Edit: partially answered my question. Set up a private space just fine (though I can’t access it since I’m not using the OS launcher) and it doesnt conflict with the work profile.
You also don’t need to create another google account for it.
Gmail app in particular has been basically abandoned for the last 4+ major android versions. I only really use it for my work email on a Shelter profile since it’s just to handle urgent stuff if I’m afk. But even that minimal use has me about ready to install k-9 on the work profile too.
Maybe my memory is bring foiled by nostalgia, but i honestly remember the Gmail Inbox app being better than the current Gmail app. Clearly google can output a good UI, they just 100% choose not to.
The built-in email app for an OS doesnt have to be amazing, but it at least needs to be reasonable. iOS Mail isn’t amazing either, but compared to the Gmail app it’s a feature-packed power user tool.
The figures that fortune 500 companies give for how much of their new code is AI generated are also wildly exaggerated, likely for similar reasons. It makes investors fork over cash for the near term. They’ll all lean on plausible deniability when it all becomes obviously untrue.
