If its a foss app the first release will be his github which will make the apk available via obtainium. I’ve notices that it will then get to fdroid a couple days layer them finally get to google play. Aurora is just a 3rd party frontend for accessing google play store that doesn’t require u to have a Google account or the play services installed.
GrapheneOS is the best for privacy imo. They only support Pixel Tablet (tangorpro) but I’ve ruled out google so ur going to have to use a different os which will be less secure.
Considering your use case u might be able to get a standalone display and put it in a custom 3d printed case with a raspberry pi and battery. I believe their are some similar projects online that are worth checking out.
U will struggle to find something cheap with an oled as its often used as a price differentiator for “premium” products.

I’ve been using it a while and love it. Its great for changing brightness its awesome.
I have GrapheneOS and haven’t been having such problems. It does aggressively kill apps when I kill them from the recent apps menu swipe thing but that’s expected behaviour. I don’t understand how having a notification is what’s keeping an app alive.
In developer settings their is an option called background process limit that limits the number of processes that will run in background. Check that see if it makes any changes.

I use the app urlcheck and have that as the default app to open all URLs (opening other apps are just special URLs). I have then turned off opening URLs for all other apps. Urlcheck then gives u a popup that let’s u decide what app opens the URL let’s u remove trackers etc.
Isn’t google messages completely closed source now?
