Those of us who don’t play AAA games or watch Warner Bros or Paramount movies don’t really have much to lose here. Worst case scenario there are always Nigerian and Uzbek movies.

Oh, looking it up they do come to about the same weight in the end (information that was very difficult to source BTW). Guess that eliminates much of the entire point of this. All I would need is 80km of range at most so I’m put off by all these cars offering 500km that I don’t want or need.

I guess an old EV is probably the better option. With the added advantage that I’ll probably get physical controls instead of a damn touch-screen.

Battery fires get more news coverage not because their more common, but because they are so catastrophic when they do happen. As for comparisons to gasoline, I’d be leaving the tank empty so that’s not a concern for me.

I would prefer not to use waste rubber and money thicker tyres carrying around a huge battery I don’t need. Worst case I can use those same tires on a car with a lighter battery.

Good point about regenerative braking, I forgot about that.

I’ve been hoping to get a PHEV because I don’t want some 300km-range battery (nor the resulting fire risk, tyre wear, or brake wear), but there aren’t any really cheap plug in hybrids. I’m probably gonna be stuck getting a used EV with an oversized battery when my sister’s old car dies.

It’s hard to see the economic merit in China’s investments in AI, or anyone’s investment in AI for that matter but the market has never really been rational. But China’s investment in particular is confusing since it’s open source.

I think what they’re going for is to undermine the American AI market. That money flowing into big tech has strategic consequences for China, and economic advantages for America. It’s in China’s interest to demonstrate cheap and free AI to cut off that funding to US tech.

Yeah, obviously. Really it’s whoever can make AI the cheapest who will win because generative AI is not going to revolutionize anything. It can break things as it has already, but without a tonne of human labor it can’t get to the level it needs for the average person to pay much money for it.

The market will be won by whoever can survive the bubble bursting.

Mint or CachyOS.

CachyOS runs 10% faster but it’s Arch-based so it’s not as easy as Mint.

I tried playing the BC Piezophile demo recently but it kept crashing on the main menu.

I’m someone who doesn’t do tinkering. If it doesn’t work then I move on to a different game until it or proton updates.

Word can open ODT. They’re trying to spite Microsoft Office, and using a format like ODT doesn’t do that as well.

I did have my panel set up vertical, with the system tray icons in two columns. Typically there were two groups (for some reason) stacked on top of eachother and if the top one had an odd number of icons then there was a conspicuous gap.

Now I use Kubuntu, though I miss the GNOME text editor (I installed it, but with GNOME being GNOME it wasn’t themeable, and I can’t find the Cinnamon or Xfce fork in the repositories).

This is why I think LLMs have made the world worse even if I don’t buy the fear-mongering. Regardless of the costs to train LLMs, the costs of having those tools available are worse than the benefits. The amount of extra work bug bounty programs have had to do thanks to AI is crazy.

Come to think of it, there are black markets for selling computer security vulnerabilities between nation-states. Maybe our governments can start flooding those with AI generated security exploits. That’d be funny.

Taiwan hasn’t been part of China since before the CCP came to power. China is doing just fine without Taiwan and Taiwan doesn’t seem to want to join China.

China views the unification of the Chinese people as key to it’s prosperity. Just like with Hong Kong and Macau. They’ve also explicitly said they intend to invade Taiwan if peaceful unification is impossible.

If they do then they will likely invade Taiwan. The threat of America blowing up TSMC to prevent if from falling into China’s hands, and nuking the world economy, is what is stopping China from invading. Once China has it’s own advanced semiconductor industry there will immediately be war.

Trump cancelling renewable energy projects already started is a danger to the world’s climate, and on top of that he’s restricting imports of Chinese renewable technology. The silver lining is that this will probably drive up energy prices and result in a lot of manufacturing being offshored.
