I loved when old games had a basic mechanic you could ignore for 99% of the game, but you’d softlock yourself if you forgot it exists.

Crouch-jumping was another offender.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The original PlayStation release is the only one that has the terrible (in a good way) translation and voiceover work. It also holds up perfectly - I only played it for the first time a few years ago, and it’s easily my favorite Metroidvania. Decades after it came out, it still remains the king of the genre that partly bears its name.

Tears of the Kingdom is so much better at 60+ FPS. And also makes Nintendo cry, which is an even better reason.

Just replying Soma Bringer for the DS. Never got an official English translation, but the fan translation is really good.
It’s an action RPG with loads of character customisation, and a very robust multiplayer mode.

Dark Chonicle/Dark Cloud 2, it’s one of Level-5’s best games of all time on the PS2

Dragons Blood/Draconis on the Dreamcast. It’s a great forgotten romp through a grimdark fantasy world.
