As to other reply: what times has vote with your wallet truly worked?

Already answered this several times, including the comment you just replied to.

People educating themselves doesn’t happen, is the point.

Yes, that is indeed the point.

This pipe dream that an overwhelming majority of consumers will suddenly become extremely conscious and educated is, at best, misguided.

That doesn’t make anything I said untrue.

others that are seeing increasing success, like China, are demonized continually even though they are quickly outranking the USA in almost every major quality of life metric

You think China, of all places, is making consumer-focused and ethical products?

China sees increasing success because they have no minimum wage and no concept of IP. So the world outsourced vast swathes of production infrastructure there only to have all their IP stolen and reproduced without any of the R&D costs. Then the government sudsidizes it to hell even further so that they can apply the Amazon model of enshittification to the global economy.

so in your case, if it applies to your argument, it’s possible and works “every time ever”, and if it goes against your argument, it doesn’t exist and no one is boycotting.

Yes, because it’s not logically possible. Once again, if people stop buying them, they can’t sell them. And they’ll be forced to make something else that people will want to buy.

I didn’t say “no one”, but it doesn’t have to be everyone either. There has to be more than a few people such that if affects their bottom line.

You are not arguing in good faith, and only want to be right in this instance.

I could say the same about you.

I’m sure you’ve never bought a display

I’ve bought lots of things with HDMI that also have Display Ports.

How does a subscription compare to TV purchases?

How does it not? It’s a withheld purchase (AKA “voting with your wallet”)

How does that one instance of politically driven consumer action equate to “every time ever”?

It doesn’t and wasn’t supposed to. The last part did.

Have you heard of Nestlé? People have boycott them forever and they still exist.

They obviously don’t or they wouldn’t exist.

Every time ever? How about Disney getting mass subscription cancellations after canning Kimmy Kimmel?

They can’t sell shit that people don’t buy.

we individually have no power

Individually, no. Collectively? Yes.

What am I supposed to do?

Don’t buy a TV? They are increasingly shitty products anyway.

Quit posting corporate propaganda. The government can regulate all they want. Businesses are malicious and just exploit loopholes everywhere and pay off the politicians. Taking away their motivation is not something they can get around.

It’s not the only way to affect change. It is the only way to make businesses respect their customers. What is your point?

See how well that has worked over the past 40 years?

…extremely well? Can you provide an example of the contrary?

don’t expect a personal boycott or even advocating heavily for others to the same to have any kind of impact whatsoever.

…of course a single person boycotting a product does nothing. People educating themselves about the products they buy and making conscious decisions to buy consumer-friendly products when buying shit (especially expensive shit) does.

They just want to go on amazon or to home depot or whatever and buy shit that looks like it will do what they need for a price point they can afford.

Plenty of people know and just don’t care. I know because I have these types of conversations all the time.

That’s where regulatory oversight comes in

See how well that has worked over the past 2000 years?

the whole “vote with your wallet” thing is stupid anyway

Voting with your wallet is literally the only way things will ever improve.

No one is saying it’s great. But that’s the point. You have to choose between convenience and getting fucked. And overwhelmingly people will choose the former. And that’s what they’re counting on.

Choose the latter and those stupid fucking companies are forced to bend to your will and then you can buy whatever fuckin TV you want.

They’re not lining up to take it though

They are though.

It’s all they’re given

Then they can choose not to buy anything, or to buy a computer monitor.

it won’t make a lick of difference in the market.

This is the defeatist mentality that keeps them so successful.

I’m not sure what that has to do with what I said. This is about corporations asking consumers to bend over and get fucked, and consumers as a whole repeatedly lining up to take it.

We don’t flock to it, they are forced upon us. Finding TVs that support DP is almost impossible.

Nothing is forced on anyone. If people refused to buy them they would be forced to add other ports.

However as someone who considers themselves fairly techy and doesn’t comply with such shitfuckery, I only learned about this last week.

Moving forward I just won’t be buying any TVs at all.

Edit: God fucking forbid any of you actually do anything, or even better, refrain from doing anything, besides bitch and moan on the internet.

It’s a better idea just to create a work profile. It’s much easier to manage and offers all the same benefits as a second device.

I can say in general that AMD chips are overwhelmingly superior, but there are exceptions.

You can also play the PC version on Android with GameNative.

Oh. The Linux thing doesn’t work on my phone anyway. And last I heard they didn’t have any support for graphical applications. And also, that’s still 2 devices since it’s essentially a VM that doesn’t run my Android apps or have access to my Android files.

What does Termux have to do with desktop mode?

Doesn’t sound much different from Android 😅

  1. They didn’t announce anything. It was leaked from their code.
  2. That’s desktop, not mobile
  3. The only thing we know about it is that it exists and is under development.

What’s the state of Android desktop for “phones”?
Happy Thanksgiving nerds! Several months ago we got a "sneak peek" at Android desktop mode. Since then it's been completely silent. I am on a Pixel 7 which doesn't have DP Alt mode. But I anxiously await the day I can use a single device for all my computing needs (other than my server). Is anyone using this or has used it recently, in the last month or so? What are your impressions?

The short version is that an enormous, multibillion dollar gambling industry has been built around Valve’s item marketplace, and in particular around CS:GO skins. If that sounds completely insane and stupid, I’m with you, but it exists. Valve takes their typical cut off of all of these trades, and thus derives massive profits from it.

Here’s the long version: https://peertube.gravitywell.xyz/videos/watch/a8e6d20c-3003-4b14-b9c4-cb6a25b238e7?isPeertubeContent=1

If it’s available in “nearly all” development then you can switch the tag to say “no AI” and then I can continue discovering and buying games that don’t have that BS.

But we all know, as does Sweeney, that that’s a lie. And also that I wouldn’t shop for games on Epic Store anyway, for reasons just like this.

This just reads like a bunch of nonsense. What are they actually doing?

True. Can’t wait for the AI collapse to bring these prices crashing down with them.

If it was going to be cheap, they’d have told us

Not true. The problem is there are a lot of moving targets in the electronics market right now, so even Valve doesn’t know what they’re going to be able to sell it for.

The worst thing about the hardware unveiling is the endless posts about pricing 😮‍💨

Honestly this is my favorite feature of the Steam Deck and SteamOS. I can (and do) even shut down the entire PC in the middle of a game.

tl;dw/r: 3 new pieces of hardware revealed coming "2026". 1. **Steam Frame** is a standalone VR headset. Release "early 2026". ARM processor. Runs SteamOS. (Yes this translates games made for x86 on Windows into Linux on ARM using Proton and FEx). Inside out tracking. Up to 144Hz. 2160x2160. Can also run Android APKs. Includes 6GHz stick for wireless streaming. 2. **Steam Controller**. Basically what we've been expecting. Just took the controls off the Steam Deck and bolted them to a controller. TMR magnetic thumbsticks. Has a weird like magnetic charging/pairing dock thingy that sticks on the back, but can still just be charged with USB-C. 3. **Steam Machine**. Cubic, softball-sized mini PC (like, literally its just a computer, much like the Steam Deck). AMD GPU. Obviously runs SteamOS as well. No word on HDMI-CEC that I can find. 300W power supply. 6x more powerful than Steam Deck. I'm going to keep updating this thread with links as I find them. Add more in the comments.
