Personally I’m hoping for

  • Larian’s next game announcement
  • info on Light no Fire
  • anything by fromsoftware
  • a new final fantasy game that isn’t based on ff7
  • the new bioshock game that was rumored for years now

The Game Awards begins 11 hours from now. What are you looking forward to?

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond feels like a game stuck between two worlds. When it’s emulating the series’ past, Beyond is an entertaining, if overly conservative, sequel. However, as the shadowy corridors make way for open-world fetch quests, and Halo-style expeditions with AI companions, it’s left feeling like a diluted experience that doesn’t fully deliver on the spirit of earlier entries.

exactly what everyone was worried about. it sounds like it’s still worth playing but doesn’t reach the highs of the series, and those open world bike sections look boring and unnecessary

But now it's all I think about playing. My recommendation is to just go in for the experience. Go in knowing nothing, and maybe even skip everything in this review, or any other review. Unfortunately, needlessly generic companions, a weak soundtrack, and story-tied fetch quests drag the overall experience down a bit. Still, fans of the Prime entries will definitely have more than enough fun with this title. ------------- **[Console Creatures](https://opencritic.com/outlet/798/console-creatures)** - [Bobby Pashalidis](https://opencritic.com/critic/7698/bobby-pashalidis) - [9 / 10](https://www.consolecreatures.com/metroid-prime-4-beyond-review/) >Metroid Prime 4: Beyond might not be a total reinvention of the famed series, but it's refined and faster than ever. Despite the prolonged development period, the campaign comes together to deliver an excellent outing for Samus as she explores an expansive world with new psychic powers that imbue the core of the game in fun, innovative ways. ------------- **[Digitec Magazine](https://opencritic.com/outlet/887/digitec-magazine)** - [Domagoj Belancic](https://opencritic.com/critic/10266/domagoj-belancic) - *German* - [4 / 5 ](https://www.digitec.ch/de/page/40664) >The core of "Metroid Prime 4: Beyond" is impressive. It feels great to explore the maze-like levels, unlock upgrades, and slowly discover new areas of the world. The art design and soundtrack are awesome. The open desert area, which I explore on a motorcycle, is a perfect contrast to traditional "Metroid" gameplay. It's a shame that the game doesn't make more use of Samus' telekinetic abilities, though. >The new characters are disappointing. They annoy me with unnecessary explanations or corny Marvel-like banter. I would also have liked a higher level of difficulty. These criticisms are likely to bother veteran "Metroid" players in particular. >Despite its shortcomings, "Metroid Prime 4: Beyond" provides one of the best reasons to buy a Switch 2. The game ticks off virtually all of the console's technical features and delivers an extremely sharp (4K) or extremely smooth (120 FPS) gaming experience. The new story characters are not in any way overly chatty, and this is still the mysterious and moody alien treasure hunt Metroid fans have come to love, but now with a funky alien bike. With intelligent level design, fluid controls, striking art direction, and a strong sense of discovery, the game blends elements from past entries to produce a dynamic emotional experience. Separating the main biomes with a vast open world sounds ridiculous on paper, but the slick traversal provided by Vi-O-La makes exploration more satisfying than ever.Combine this with the stunning art direction, ferocious new boss characters, and a surprisingly endearing squad of Federation troopers, and Beyond is quite possibly the boldest, most well-realised Metroid game to date. At the same time i still would like to see some gameplay. The game was revealed in two years ago and we still don’t know how it plays

Goat simulator and its sequels/DLCs. It’s a dumb shitpost game where you run around and create chaos but I enjoy it without any irony for some reason

shame the sequel was so tedious and dull. Somehow they found a way to make the first one look like a masterpiece in comparison

2x8 GB RAM for 130 dollars? What the fuck? I knew theyve gotten more expensive recently but that stings.

Definitely over 500$. Considering the statement it sounds like it will be at least 800 dollars.

A PC of similar performance is about $550

where did you get that? With the price increases of pc components in recent months, it’s more like $750+.

Tencent are increasing their stake in Ubisoft, but the rumors of them buying the company outright seem to be false

This is not true, development has stalled the past few years because Riot demanded they port it to a new engine, which was why it got indefinitely delayed and eventually cancelled

Things were moving well before that. The original developers took back control of the project and are back on track

This is the first time we have gotten actual uncut gameplay of Hytale, and it looks great. Some things I noticed * Each weapon type has a special skill that gets charged when dealing damage * Trees break instantly when breaking its trunk * You can hold a torch in your hand to light the area around you while moving * You can climb up blocks and roll when landing from a high place to avoid fall damage * There's a detailed map you can open at any time * The last few minutes tease mod development tools. You can edit assets, models, worldgen, create prefabs, spawn NPCs, etc from a dedicated menu in the game

Correction, don’t buy a cheap gaming laptop. There are plenty of ones like the lenovo legion and rog strix g16 that have good build quality and will last you years.

The ones with crappy plastic and overheat regularly are usually the ones under $1000

I think the mass market would still rather buy a console, so I assume most people interested in the steam machine specifically want a PC box. Now that I looked at the specs it doesn’t seem that powerful, and I doubt it will be cheaper than a PS5.

These sound absolutely amazing but it all depends on the price.

if the Steam controller is on par with a new 8bitdo then I would definitely pick it up.

The steam machine sounds intriguing but there is already a big market for mini PCs and I don’t know if consumers would go out of their way to buy a steam PC box. I’m most skeptical about this one

Steam Frame looks fantastic but I really hope it’s cheap enough to compete with the Meta Quest 3 and isn’t just another ~$1000 headset for enthusiasts

no, it’s a direct fork of gzdoom, all the old mods will still work

I also played it for a few hours on release, it lacked any sort of content and i never got over how they sold armor colors. The most basic form of customization, not skins, but a different color of your armor were bring sold just so you can look slightly different from everybody else in the server. A complete mess.

Is it worth playing the new update for new content or should I wait a bit longer? idk if there’s enough new content to tell friends to get on.

Why would anyone be excited for a series that now peaked 21 years ago, and has only had 1 other release in that time?

I understand why youre not interested and I also don’t care for it, but it’s disingenuous to say it isn’t one of the most hyped games of all time. The first trailer has 268 million views on youtube and that’s only on the official channel. People are excited.

Every decision matters, every century tells a new story, and when you finally close the map after dozens of hours, it truly feels like you've shaped history. ------------- **[IGN](https://opencritic.com/outlet/56/ign)** - [Leana Hafer](https://opencritic.com/critic/7792/leana-hafer) - [8 / 10](https://www.ign.com/articles/europa-universalis-5-review) >Europa Universalis 5 is definitely hurting for some balance tuning at the moment, but its depth of simulation and ultra detailed map might make it the most on-paper impressive historical strategy game of all time. ------------- **[NoobFeed](https://opencritic.com/outlet/616/noobfeed)** - [Mezbah Turzo](https://opencritic.com/critic/10620/mezbah-turzo) - [95 / 100](http://noobfeed.com/reviews/europa-universalis-5-review) >Europa Universalis V isn't perfect; AI quirks, balance tweaks, and the occasional micro-management tedium remain. But when it clicks, it's a deep, rewarding, and endlessly playable grand strategy experience that feels like a proper evolution, not just an expansion. ------------- **[PC Gamer](https://opencritic.com/outlet/162/pc-gamer)** - [Jonathan Bolding](https://opencritic.com/critic/623/jonathan-bolding) - [87 / 100](https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/europa-universalis-5-review/) >A new bar for complexity in the historical grand strategy genre that sometimes buckles under the weight of its ambition. ------------- **[SECTOR.sk](https://opencritic.com/outlet/615/sector-sk)** - Darrian151 - *Slovak* - [8 / 10](https://www.sector.sk/recenzia/40289/europa-universalis-v.htm) >Europa Universalis V is another brilliant grand strategy game from Paradox. It is on par with its predecessors and takes the series forward. It is challenging and complex. However, it's best not to rely too heavily on the AI's assistance, as it tends to fail. ------------- **[Stevivor](https://opencritic.com/outlet/424/stevivor)** - [8 / 10](https://stevivor.com/reviews/europa-universalis-5-review/) >Issues aside, Europa Universalis 5 has been an utterly incredible introduction to a whole new gaming world for me. There's some slight rough edges, which aren't surprising for a game of this scale, and room for expansion to better explore certain ideas and regions, but isn't there always? -------------

> Arc Raiders has only been out a day, but it has already surpassed a Steam concurrent peak player count of 264,673, making it one of the biggest extraction shooters ever on Valve's platform.

I doubt microsoft even knows what luanti is

from what I understand mod loaders will need to remove the part where they deobfuscate code then translate mods. this update will break modloaders for a while but in the end it should simplify the process and make modding easier.

what are you on about??? Bedrock isn’t ahead on anything except how many microtransactions it has. Java edition has been very well supported and regularly updated. In fact, the java ed is still considered the main one that gets features and snapshots first before being ported to bedrock. Nobody uses bedrock except console users.

lemmy users will see objectively good news and still try their hardest to be cynical and blame any corporation involved

Minecraft is removing code obfuscation in Java Edition
> Minecraft: Java Edition has been obfuscated since its release. This obfuscation meant that people couldn’t see our source code. Instead, everything was scrambled – and those who wanted to mod Java Edition had to try and piece together what every class and function in the code did. > > Modding is at the heart of Java Edition – and obfuscation makes modding harder. We're excited about this change to remove obfuscation, as it should make it quicker and easier for modders to create and improve mods. Now you won’t have to untangle tricky code or deal with unclear names. What’s more, de-bugging will become more straightforward, and crash logs will actually be readable! surprisingly fantastic and consumer friendly move from mojang, good on them

it’s so weird to me that it sounds like they might shut down servers later. From what I heard, the new expansion was surprisingly well received. The past few days it peaked at greater than 40K concurrent players each day. surely the servers can pay for itself?

> The recently launched Season 10 and Nighthaven update will serve as the final content release for New World on PC and consoles. It is only after much consideration that we've reached this decision. To thank you, the New World community, for your support over the years, we have made the Nighthaven release available to you for free. To ensure all New World players can experience this content, we also made Rise of the Angry Earth free for all PC players. > > In the coming months, we will provide more details on what to expect and other essential information. Rest assured, our intention is to keep servers operating through 2026, allowing our community time to continue their adventures in Aeternum. Additionally, New World: Aeternum will still be downloadable for PlayStation Plus members (Extra and Premium).

Japan’s attitude to e-sports is so bizarre. between this, Nintendo constantly shutting down fan tournaments, and other companies acting like e-sports don’t exist until it becomes big enough not to capitalize on…

How the fuck do they think it’s going to work if they keep gatekeeping the few people interested in esports?

they had many people working in video games? Last I heard they were 99% outsourced contractors maintaining games like new world

Im sympathizing with both sides of the conversation. Grand strategy games are so complex and can be supported for 10+ years so it makes sense that they regularly make DLCs to support development.

But they’re not totally optional/unnecessary. The problem is that many games are balanced around the new DLCs that sometimes you’re at a disadvantage if you dont buy them. I remember some drama around crusader kings where some mechanics don’t make sense unless you buy some DLCs

Things like compiling shaders, etc, shouldn’t be an issue on the new Xbox, for example.

From what I remember that’s exactly what MS is doing as well, xbox would let you download pre-compiled shaders for the ROG handheld. Though I don’t think you upload any of your own shaders since the xbox hardware is unified as opposed to steam having to support everybody on Linux

It's confirmed: the next xbox will be a Windows PC box. It sounds very interesting that this will also be backwards compatible with Xbox games, including 360/One/Series games. I wonder if it's just emulation, and how well that will work

ending spoilers
  1. the idea to spare chronos comes from melinoe. in the normal ending, zagreus spares him and melinoe gets very upset while zagreus tells her to get over it.
  2. Melinoe keeps her memories of the alternate universe where she grew up with her family. in the normal ending she was robbed from any sort of happy ending while everyone around her (including chronos) remembers her living happily in the house of hades. we also get a new cutscene showing her grow up with her brother.
  3. there’s more dialogue in general to flesh out the ending and her relationship with her family.

link to the new ending video (SPOILERS, OBVIOUSLY)

Without spoiling anything, it’s so much better. Supergiant have managed to fix my biggest issues with it

Mildly disappointed that they are releasing episodically.

at least theyre releasing it every week as opposed to Telltale’s old games where we had to wait months for the game to finish. I don’t mind it too much

Between alan wake 2 barely breaking even and fbc firebreak flopping hard, I can see why they would change the CEO. hopefully this doesn’t compromise the actual games in the future to try and get more money

I’ve been playing it and its reminding me of terraria as soon as it released. lots of fun but lacking in content and balance, similar to pre hard mode terraria.

Well, it’s as we feared. the story seems to be not bad but every review calls the gameplay boring and uninspired.

Great article, thank you for sharing

What are your individual development backgrounds and day jobs (if any)

I’m currently a PhD candidate at the french atomic energy comission (CEA).

this is literally the last response I would expect. I assumed all emulator developers had boring software engineering jobs

Stories Untold is excellent, its a horror game that’s mostly text based.

this is why ublock origin is a must have when browsing the internet these days

tldr bigger focus on upscaling and data compression, which seems to be what everybody else is doing too

Is this a different voice actor? he sounds different from the show.

reviews are still mixed, some say the game is massively improved while others say it still has many of the same issues. everyone agrees it’s better but I don’t know if it’s a great game.
