Let’s keep the comments civil folks and remember that none of this actually matters and nobody really cares lol

then why make the video lmao

tbf mojang is a special case, where they’ll release their game on a new platform, it works fine, and as updates come in it gets worse and worse

that would be impossible! Lord Emperor Gaben is the sole bringer of light to a world of darkness, he, and he himself, is single-handedly the reason why there is still good in the gaming industry! for example, he, alone, by himself, birthed Linux, so we could all enjoy a world free of the tyranny of Microsoft!!!

ok but for real. why do gamers talk about gabe newell the way tech people talked about elon musk circa 2018… im seeing a lot of uncomfortable parallels

i’ll note that, as the article mentions, even apple and google haven’t removed the game in russia (at least not yet)

are valve complicit, or just cowards?

well, many games are tied to the steam client (through the steam runtimes, steam DRM, steam input, needing a steam account for online play…). for most games, no, you can’t just take the executable and do whatever you want with it. you’ll need the steam client, and this creates a lock-in effect. because you need steam open to play all your steam games, you won’t look elsewhere for games, and you won’t see games not on steam, unless they’re big enough.

imo, the solution to this is to break the lock-in, have interoperability between clients. there’s no good reason why cross-play between steam and GOG, for example, is an exception and not the norm. there’s no good reason why the steam client is required for so many games, there should be offline installers. there’s no good reason why steam input only works with the steam client. part of the reason why proton is so amazing is that it’s open-source, other steam technologies should be the same!

there is another way, games shouldn’t be tied to the store you bought them in

like, for physical objects, you can buy a thing from one store and another thing from another store, and they’ll be in your house no problem, you won’t even have to think about which store you bought which thing from (unless you need to return it or for customer service). it’s fundamentally decentralized. why shouldn’t digital distribution work that way too? it’s entirely possible, but obviously vendors benefit from locking you to their platform (that goes for steam, but also to epic games and, to a lesser extent GOG as well)

there should be no company with power to abuse in the first place. steam refused to sell your game? alright, you can sell it in other places and it’ll be fine. but that’s not how it works right now, most people buy on steam, and ONLY on steam, because it has a dominant position. so, if you can’t sell on steam, you’re done for!

and we can analyse each ban on a case-by-case basis (there’s many steam game bans I am glad happened), but there’s also cases like VILE: Exhumed, where steam caved to pressure from payment processors (which are also very centralized, that’s another honestly bigger problem) to ban a game with progressive politics simply because it talked about stuff that makes reactionary prudes uncomfortable.

we can’t just rely on Good Guy Valve to stay good forever

i think we’re missing the forest for the trees here by arguing wether valve should’ve allowed the game or not.

the fact that valve is in such a dominant position that them refusing to sell a game can mean not only the game’s failure, but the shutdown of the studio making it, is a big problem. and it’s not just this game, after the payment processor affair, VILE: Exhumed (a game about sexual assault, among other things) was banned from steam (for being about sexual assault), before it could even release

game devs shouldn’t have to rely on just one vendor’s approval to sell their stuff, it’s an unhealthy ecosystem.

steam has a 75% marketshare of PC games distribution in the US. the 2nd biggest player, epic games, has a market share estimated from 3% to 7,5%. i can’t find data for steam’s market share outside the US, but i’d expect it to be even higher.

if google can be considered to have a monopoly on web browsers with 73% of the marketshare, even as alternatives (like safari, 13%) exist, i don’t see why steam wouldn’t count as well.

the game was bought back by Simon (the guy who owns Hypixel and sold the game in the first place) and it looks like it’s back in development!

proton without newell is proton, but with maybe a different direction

proton without valve’s workers and WINE/DXVK contributors is nothing. it’s literally nothing.

the same goes for basically any projects. the billionaire CEOs are (sometimes, not even always!) the people who take decisions. everyone else does the work. without the CEOs, the same projects would have decisions taken in other ways. without the workers, there would be nothing.

stop licking billionaire boots.

“single-handedly” lmao, as if newell is the guy doing all the work and not the valve employees who work for him… or, yknow, the contributors to all the open-source projects steamos is built on

proton and steamos would be nowhere today without the decades of work by the WINE/DXVK contributors, and the myriad of other open-source projects that make Linux into what it is. all valve did was add their proprietary client on top of that (as well as fund the development of proton, tbf, i’m thankful for them on that one… but again, that work was done by valve employees and contributors, not the billionaire CEO)

even then, “he used to make games”… was he alone? did he not have a team with him? where are their billions?

valve is an alright company all things considered, but it’s baffling to me how many people act like they’re the second coming… people should know better. valve is a corporation operating under capitalism. they’re not above doing shady stuff for profit.

that moment when the One Good Billionaire™ casually orders a boat that costs several times more money than most of us will ever see in our lifetimes 🙃

i get that there’s worse out there but i’m tired of people acting like newell is a saint… he’s just another billionaire.

they don’t even run their servers anymore, it’s not like the fan servers are competing with them…

is sony turning into another nintendo/disney? flexing their copyright muscle just because they can?

can’t speak to the difficulty but it is 60 FPS now!

…if you play it on switch 2 that is

hopefully this makes ARM-based Linux handhelds more suitable too! that would be awesome

that’s not even a new thing…

my mother had a windows 7 laptop for work, she upgraded it to windows 10 (microsoft did a similar nagging back then) and not only did it become atrociously slow, a bunch of hardware drivers also stopped working, including pretty important stuff like USB

unfortunately linux wouldn’t have been an option cause the software she needed was (and still is) windows only

look at Mastodon and it’s practically what’s happening there. bot farms don’t even bother setting up their own servers, they just go to mastodon.social (by far the largest instance) and bot from there. and because .social refuses to have manual approval for each account, and many instances don’t want to defenerate from where almost everyone is, the problem keeps happening…

can second 8BitDo, their stuff is awesome

for 2D games (or games that are played with a d-pad rather), their Pro line is also very good! i have the Pro 2, and it works fantastic with Linux. idk about the Pro 3 but i can’t imagine it would be much different, and i heard the d-pad on that one is even better

i mean it’s not your refusal to play pokémon schmirtle & thromble that will plunge nintendo to obscurity

at that point, if the game interests you, may as well pirate it

of course they are. they aid genocide abroad, why wouldn’t they do it at home too?

i like what they do but giving donations to a for-profit company that already sells stuff seems a bit silly to me

honestly for most people i feel like AI has already a solidified use, “the magic thing that answers all your questions and generates pretty pictures*”

compare that to NFTs which had strictly no use for the average person. i think what we’re seeing with AI is quite different

will the hype maintain itself when the AI bubble bursts, the VC money dries up, free options get removed and paid options significantly ramp up in price? that remains to be seen

*(the fact that the answers and pictures are often garbage is irrelevant. as long as they’re good enough often enough, it has value to many people)

it’s not helped by the fact that there’s a bajillion websites claiming to be Eden’s website…

half this community is “${game} released on steam!”, these are just as much ads as this post is

often I think to myself “damn, i should buy one of these dual screen handhelds to emulate 3DS games!”

…and then i remember that i have a 3DS lol

i know people here hate nintendo (for good reasons), but peeps, the switch 2 is already one of the fastest selling consoles of all time. nintendo knows what they’re doing, they’re making a bunch of switch 2’s because people buy them.

i too wish for their failure but y’all are setting yourselves up for disappointment

yea but these gamers aren’t thinking about you, or about the quality of art

because this is what they want, they want the ethnostate in fiction just like they want it irl. they are white supremacists first and foremost

finally, a farming sim that acknowledges the wonderful realities of modern farming 🥰🥰🥰

in 2020, they made people pay 60$ for 3 old games. people thought it was ridiculous.

in 2025, they’re making you pay 70$ for 2 old games.

lmao

nah, death to all intellectual property. it’s not better when it’s physical. in fact, in some cases, it’s much much worse; like with medicine patents

they didn’t include galaxy 2 in 3d all stars to make the suckers double dip 5 years later lol

anyways, if anyone here has decompilation knowledge and wants to help, the original mario galaxy has a decomp project and they have 21% of the code decompiled!

i wonder tho, why are they going after palworld specifically? cause palworld is faaaar from being the first pokemon-inspired game, and id argue it’s not even the best one

and it can’t just be the plagiarized design allegations (which, tbf, some pals are really on the limit, not that it’s a bad thing), because if it was they’d just use their existing copyright instead of filing tons of new patents

nintendo directs were always advertisements, it’s kinda their goal: to advertise to you upcoming nintendo products

I guess Iwata and Reggie made them more pleasant to watch, but they were still ads

even if you’re a nintendo fan, you don’t have to tune in to 1 hour of advertisements, you know

i promise, once it’s over you’ll find out about all announcements you care about in other ways
